Listening, Contemplating, and Practicing while Painting; Eliminating Attachments through Painting
FGS Hsi Lai Temple has held a monthly Day Of Giving since October 2021. Each time, volunteers engage in various tasks to give back to the community. Volunteer Pan Ching Hsia was impressed by how the venerable provided different Buddhist teachings on two separate painting activities. This inspired her to contemplate the metaphor of “eliminating attachments through painting” (以漆打七去我執), suggesting that one should engage in spiritual practice by letting go of their ego and attachment associated with the seventh consciousness.
Pan Ching Hsia shared her reflections on this activity through writing daily news blurbs under 250 words each. She thanked the venerable for providing her with the opportunity to write the blurbs which allowed her to refine her thoughts and eliminate unnecessary words. She found this writing exercise to be beneficial in training her mind.
For the Day of Giving on May 28, 2022, 23 volunteers repainted the library and the balustrades surrounding the temple. Venerable Zhi Xing emphasized that painting can be like a form of meditation, a chance to cultivate mindfulness and paying attention to detail. A year later in the same event, Venerable Zhi Xing’s teachings surprised Pan Ching Hsia once again.
On June 17, 2023, almost 40 volunteers participated in the painting project, including parents and children from the TAG school. Venerable Zhi Xing encouraged volunteers to apply the practice of “listening, contemplating, and practicing” while painting Just as old paint needs to be removed so that a new layer of paint can stick, volunteers should focus on removing deep-seated bad habits and attachment to their ego. The term “painting” (漆) is homophonous to the word for “seven” (七) in Mandarin, and this reminded Pan Ching Hsia of the Seventh Consciousness in the Buddhist teachings. The Seventh Consciousness means the deluded awareness of a self..
In July, Pan Ching Hsia mentioned that Venerable Zhi Xing delivered an inspiring teaching on weeding as a spiritual practice.
On July 8, 2023, about 25 volunteers participated in the monthly Day Of Giving which involved weeding and repainting. Venerable Zhi Xing explained to the volunteers that the act of weeding is like removing the afflictions and negative habits within ourselves. She urged all volunteers to look inward and remove them promptly.
Pan Ching Hsia mentioned that the atmosphere during the Day of Giving has always been joyful except for one particularly sentimental occasion back in February 2023.
Sixty-five from various groups gathered on the Day Of Giving on Feb. 28 to commemorate the passing of Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the founding master of FGS. They paid their respect to him in the main shrine before starting their work. Venerable Zhi Xing expressed her gratitude to the volunteers for coming on short notice. FGS founding master Venerable Master Hsing Yun passed away peacefully at the age of 97 in Taiwan on the Lantern Festival, Feb. 5, 2023. It was due to this reason, the date for this Day of Giving had to be changed several times which reminded us of the impermanence in life. Venerable Master Hsing Yun taught us to accept ‘Impermanence’ and ‘Birth and Death’ with a non-biased attitude. The most important thing in life is to cherish all affinities and practice the Three Acts of Goodness and Four Givings.
In conclusion, Pan Ching Hsia expressed that being a part of the Day Of Giving was not just about giving but also about receiving. One can gain confidence, happiness, hope, and convenience from volunteering.
