Racing Against Time for Resuscitation: Hsi Lai Girls Scouts’ First Aid Training

“Tick-tock, tick-tock…” amidst the metronome’s rhythm and the shouts of instructor Cipriano Castellano, “Press firmly! Use your hands to bring the patient back to life!” 17 members of the Hsi Lai Girls Scouts Troop 18894 and their parents felt the urgency of every second during their cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.
With 44 years of firefighting experience, Mr. Castellano is now retired but is dedicated to promoting CPR and First Aid training. In the five-hour training session, besides instructing the participants on performing CPR on adult and infant mannequins, he also taught essential first aid knowledge related to choking, wound dressing, burns, allergic reactions, heatstroke, and hypothermia. When he saw participants feeling overwhelmed or neglecting crucial details, he encouraged them not to be afraid and emphasized, “Life is precious, and first aid is a mission that must not be taken lightly.” He shared an experience of performing CPR for a remarkable 16 minutes, a record in his career. The patient came to the fire station afterward to celebrate his birthday, thanking Mr. Castellano for the memorable “gift of rebirth.”
All 17 girls scouts and their parents, as well as Outreach Department leader Venerable Zhi Xing, and Girl Scouts advisor Venerable Zhi San passed the assessment and obtained a two-year valid CPR certification. Girl Scout parent Lily Koo was impressed by the practical application of tourniquets, finding them highly useful. Another parent Hannah Zhou praised Mr. Castellano’s organized and methodological approach, stating that they will remember it well and be courageous in lending a helping hand. Girl Scout Allison Chieh mentioned that the content covered today would be tremendously helpful in dealing with emergencies during scout activities. Girl Scout Kristen Chieh expressed aspirations to become a medical professional, and Mr. Castellano’s enthusiasm further strengthened her motivation.
