“Chinese New Year and Members’ Birthday Celebrations” — Reflections by Kathy Lam, Rosemead Subchapter
On March 7, 2026, the three subchapters—Rosemead, Westminster, and Monterey Park One, jointly hosted their Chinese New Year and members’ birthday celebration in the dining hall at Hsi Lai Temple. Approximately 80 members and guests attended this joyful luncheon gathering. Members from the three subchapters came together in a warm and harmonious atmosphere, celebrating friendship, gratitude, and the spirit of the Dharma.
We were honored to have Abbott Hui Dong, Dong Mama, and several venerable join this special occasion. Their presence brought encouragement and blessings to everyone in attendance. The event was warmly hosted by Mia and Therese, who guided the event with enthusiasm and care. The delicious vegetarian lunch, including soup, was thoughtfully prepared by the temple, allowing everyone to enjoy a wholesome and nourishing meal together.
During the event, Abbott Hui Dong came forward to give a short speech. As the emcee, Mia spoke in Mandarin and Therese translated into English, he warmly greeted everyone in Cantonese with “Happy New Year” and “Gung Hey Fat Choy.” Everyone was delighted and thrilled to hear him speaking Cantonese. He reflected on the true meaning of wealth, explaining that while people often associate prosperity with money, our daily lives are often filled with afflictions, mental defilements, and disturbing emotions, which do not represent true richness.
Abbott Hui Dong emphasized that health, happiness, and wisdom are essential in our daily lives. By applying wisdom, we can reduce our transgressions, and through our intrinsic heart of compassion, we can face difficulties with tolerance and an open mind. He highlighted that wisdom and compassion are the fundamental forms of true wealth and richness, far more valuable than material possessions.
Finally, he offered heartfelt wishes to all BLIA members, committee members, and their families, sharing Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s 2026 calligraphy: “Harmonious Coexistence and Success as Swift as a Galloping Horse.” He encouraged everyone to make the most of their prosperity in Dharma, compassion, wisdom, health, and happiness, and to apply these blessings in daily life for the benefit of both self and others.
The celebration also featured song performances by the three subchapter presidents and members, creating a joyful and harmonious atmosphere. Their performances brought smiles and laughter to the audience and strengthened the sense of unity among the members. In addition, the organizers prepared raffle drawings and Dharma quiz questions, allowing participants to test their knowledge of Buddhist teachings while enjoying a fun and lively activity. Many members enthusiastically participated, making the gathering both educational and entertaining.
The luncheon lasted about an hour and a half, during which everyone enjoyed not only the delicious food but also the warm fellowship and meaningful interactions. Members had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new members, and share in the joy of practicing together in the Dharma community.
The event took place in the VIP room next to the dining hall, which was beautifully decorated by dedicated volunteers from the three subchapters. Their thoughtful arrangements and festive decorations created a warm, welcoming environment for the celebration, reflecting the spirit of teamwork, generosity, and joyful service.
Special appreciation was extended to the three subchapter presidents, organizers, and volunteers whose dedication and cooperation made this gathering possible. Through their collective efforts and spirit of service, the celebration became a meaningful opportunity for members to strengthen their connections and deepen their commitment to the practice of Humanistic Buddhism.
The gathering concluded in a spirit of gratitude, harmony, and Dharma joy, leaving everyone feeling uplifted and inspired. Participants were encouraged to continue putting the compassionate teachings of Venerable Master Hsing Yun into practice in their daily lives, and to work together to bring greater kindness, wisdom, and harmony to the community.
